This is our last full week before the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday.  We are extremely busy on Team 5-3 this week.

In Math, we are continuing our work on division with two digit divisors.  My afterschool help day is Monday and have many students taking the opportunity for extra help.  We are teaching long division the traditional method (the way WE learned in school), so feel free to help if your child needs assistance.  My homework for the week is as follows (subject to change):

I am anticipating Topic 5 Test Tuesday or Wednesday next week.  To reinforce skills and to help with extra credit, please have students complete page 138/139 sets A-F (+5 points).

In Science, we are finishing up our chapter on the Engineering Design Process (unit 2).  We will have Unit 2 Test on Friday 11/21.  To help with studying, students should know vocabulary, Reread lessons 1 & 3 from the book and review "whole"ly notes for lesson 1 & 3.  We will complete Chapter Review in class and complete some practice games at school.  A study guide will go home with students tomorrow.

We are also designing prototype wind turbines in class this week.  Students have sketched their designs and will put their sketch into action with a build and redesign.  Pictures to follow.

Weekly Plans 11/10

Last week was another fantastic week in room A212.  We had presentations from students who completed tower enrichment projects.  The details in the projects amazed me, we have some great engineers in grade 5.

We also had our own Kyle representing 5th grade at the St. John's Math Team competition.  We are so proud of Kyle!!  He even showed us how to solve some of the practice problems.

In science we learned how to build a prototype and completed a lab to demonstrate our knowledge.

This week, although it is a short one, will be another great learning experience.

Science - We will complete wholey notes for Lesson 3 on Wednesday.  We will have a Lesson 2/3 Quiz on Friday, students should use their wholey notes from lesson 3 and vocabulary to study.  We should be wrapping up the Engineering Design Process this week with a unit exam some time next week.

Math - We are starting to work with 2 digit divisors in math class.  On Monday, students will have to complete practice side only 5.2 and questions 1-17 on benchmark practice test Topics 1 - 4.  We will be completing the Benchmark Topic 1-4 assessment this week.   This assessment informs me who has mastered the skills in Topics 1 through 4.  Look for practice to come home each night, this should be a review for your child.

Reminders:  Report card envelopes need to be returned.

As always, please feel free to call with any questions.

Parents have asked how they can assist their children in math.  Please help your child master the basic multiplication/division facts, it will make the multi step algorithms much easier if a students has mastery of facts.

Science - We are continuing the Engineering Design Process - Unit 2 this week.  We will be using the process this week in the lab to create a prototype and redesign.  In addition, we will start Lesson 3 reading and wholey notes.  Ask your child about the type of paintbrush cleaner they designed in class today.  I'm amazed by the creativity and ingenuity in this group of students.

As always, please feel free to contact me with any questions.
