First Day

What a successful first day we had on Team 5-3!  I was so happy to meet all of our new students.  The following items should be returned to school:

1.)  Signed team letter
2.) Media release form

Reminders:  Picture day on 9/1 and Summer Reading Project is due Friday.  Looking forward to day #2!

Summer 2016

I hope everyone is enjoying the remaining days of summer and finishing up their summer reading.  School starts on Tuesday, August 30th for students.  Teacher assignments will be mailed out soon.

Weekly Plans WE 3/19

It was great to see so many parents last week at parent teacher conferences.  If you were unable to make the conferences, we would be happy to make time to discuss at another time.  This week my plans are as follows:

Math - We are continuing work on addition and subtraction of mixed number with and without regrouping.  We should finish the unit this week, with a Topic 10 test next Tuesday (3/22).  Homework is as follows:

Monday - 10.4 P & R
Tuesday - 10.5 P & R
Wednesday - 10.6 Quick Check
Thursday - 10.1 P & R

In addition, if students have any unfinished classwork in his/her red folder, they should try to complete this work at home.

Science - We are working on Unit 5 Ecosystems, Lesson 3, How Do Environmental Changes Affect Organisms.  We will continue reading the lesson, followed by wholey notes.  There will be no science homework other than prepare for Lesson 3 on Friday.

Christa McAuliffe Field Trip 2/9

Don't forget our field trip is planned for tomorrow Tuesday, February 9th.  We are leaving promptly at 8:00 a.m. and return for 2 p.m.

Students will need to bring a bagged lunch with no glass bottles or nut products.  Jobs will be announced during homeroom before we leave.

In the event of  no school or a delay at Charlton Middle or Framingham State, our trip will be postponed until the spring.  Think positive!!!

Lesson Plans WE 2/5/16

Second quarter report cards went home on Friday, please return signed envelopes to school.  We are beginning adding and subtraction fractions with like and unlike denominators (Topic 9).  The following is my homework for the week:

Math:
Monday -  P & R 9.1 (photocopied - do not use workbook)
Tuesday - P & R 9.2 (photocopied - do not use workbook)
Wednesday - P & R 9.1 (from workbook - writing to Explain)
Thursday - P & R 9.5 (photocopied - do not use workbook)

Science

We are continuing our research on our Mission to Mars.  Please forward any usable recyclable materials to school so that we can start building for the end of the week.  I've attached a link to examples of model cars, so that parents can get the idea of the types of donated items which can be sent into the class.

This week, students will finish research for vehicles, complete individual and team sketches, make a 3-D model, and begin to build prototypes.

Lesson Plans WE 1/29/16

We are back into the swing of things on Team 5-3.  We are proud to announce that the fifth grade students have raised over $3,500 for the field trip to the Christa McAuliffe Center at Framingham State College.  In addition, the Charlton PTO has graciously contributed the remainder of the balance due.  Our team will be going on Tuesday, February 9th.  Please send your student with a disposable lunch.  Plans for the week are as follows:

Math

We are working on Topic 8 (Algebra) and the students are loving the process.  I teach the GEMDAS method which is groupings for G instead of parenthesis for PEMDAS.  Nothing else has changed in the process only the P and G.  We will be testing on Friday, 1/29.    Extra Credit (+5 pts) is pg. 216-217, Sets A-D.  Homework is as follows:

Monday - P & R 8.6
Tuesday - P & R 8.8 (photo copy)
Wednesday - P & R 8.7
Thursday -  Pg. 216/217 Q 1-18

Science

We have started on unit on Mars Engineering Design Unit.  The students are designing a Mars land transportation vehicle using biomimicry of a desert organism.  We have started research in class and will present during the week.  The students will test different vehicle types on "Mars" soil during this week too.
