Weekly Plans 11/10

Last week was another fantastic week in room A212.  We had presentations from students who completed tower enrichment projects.  The details in the projects amazed me, we have some great engineers in grade 5.

We also had our own Kyle representing 5th grade at the St. John's Math Team competition.  We are so proud of Kyle!!  He even showed us how to solve some of the practice problems.

In science we learned how to build a prototype and completed a lab to demonstrate our knowledge.

This week, although it is a short one, will be another great learning experience.

Science - We will complete wholey notes for Lesson 3 on Wednesday.  We will have a Lesson 2/3 Quiz on Friday, students should use their wholey notes from lesson 3 and vocabulary to study.  We should be wrapping up the Engineering Design Process this week with a unit exam some time next week.

Math - We are starting to work with 2 digit divisors in math class.  On Monday, students will have to complete practice side only 5.2 and questions 1-17 on benchmark practice test Topics 1 - 4.  We will be completing the Benchmark Topic 1-4 assessment this week.   This assessment informs me who has mastered the skills in Topics 1 through 4.  Look for practice to come home each night, this should be a review for your child.

Reminders:  Report card envelopes need to be returned.

As always, please feel free to call with any questions.

Weekly Plans 10/27

We had a really fun week last week with Community Reading Day.  We were lucky to have a parent volunteer read to our class.  Thank you!!

A few reminders this week:

The can drive is running from 10/27 - 11/7, please send in can goods/boxed goods.  We are not accepting any Ramen Noodles, peanut butter, expired or dented cans.  Any little bit will help families in the community.  Thanks for all your support.

The Scholastic book fair is running on Tuesday, October 28th.  Any student interesting in purchasing  books may bring cash or check made payable to Charlton PTO.

In Math this week, students are continuing to learn division with a one digit divisor.  Tonight's homework is Practice and reteaching 4.3 which deals with interpreting remainders.  Often in word problems a remainder is not an option.  My goal for the week is to have students be comfortable with words problems and determine what to do with the remainder (reasonableness).  Later in the week, I will introduce divisibility rules and provide more practice and projects on long division.

In science, we are continuing our unit on the Engineering Design Process.  We will have a lesson 1 quiz on Thursday including the following vocabulary works (engineering, technology, prototype, criteria).  We will complete wholly notes before the quiz so that students can utilize wholly notes, vocabulary and reread lesson 1 to be prepared for quiz.

Make it a great week!
